Broadband and Telephones
The arrival of broadband to Cabrera really is now imminent (mid-Feb 2008). It has been held up by the roadworks (or lack of roadworks) on the hill up from Cortijo Grande so an alternative solution is now being used. The main connection to the outside world should have been run through cables under the road but it has now been run on the existing line of telephone poles that lead up to the arch. The "exchange" has been installed at the arch and it will very soon be connected up to the houses near the ranch road and around the back of La Pilica. Connection to the rest of the village will progress along with the other new infrastructure which is to be laid under the existing roads in the village.
Potential subscribers will be contacted by the office very shortly, when all the details of costs have been put together. This will enable everyone's applications to go into Telefónica together and should help the initial installations to go more smoothly. In the meantime, you can get an idea of prices by going to the Telefónica website.
It's a popular pastime to criticise Telefónica as if they are still in the same league as the old Post Office Telephones in the UK, but the evidence with our broadband is entirely to the contrary. At every stage of the process, Telefonica have very promptly taken things as far as they could and have then been left waiting for the Cabrera infrastructure. They ran the fibre-optic link across Cortijo Grande to the bottom of the hill at the earliest opportunity. They installed the cabling under the ranch road as soon as the tubes were in place. Now they have put a solution in place to get around the problems on the hill. You may not hear it very often but, "Well done, Telefónica".
