THE MARINA (Puerto Deportivo) is set to open this week in Garrucha.
Local people and tourists went out in the sunshine last weekend to try out the new walkways despite barriers and no entry signs still being in place.
In addition to more than a hundred parking spaces and 336 moorings for private boats there is a green area with plants and trees and a pedestrian area by the sea.
The marina which took 11 months to build and the cost of more than €4 million does not include the tunnel being built at the edge of Garrucha near Mercadona and the temporary traffic lights.
This underground access road for lorries is a separate project and it is unknown when, or if it will be completed.
A source who asked not to be named has confirmed that the tunnel won’t be completed this year. However, there are plans to return the roads and pavements to their original state by April so that pedestrians and traffic can circulate as before.
A Port office employee commented that the marina “seems very good so far,” adding “we’ll soon get a better idea, now it’s up and running.”
A percentage of the final payment for the marina will remain as a deposit with the Junta de Andalucia (regional government) for a year to cover the cost of putting right any imperfections.
The worker’s opinion was echoed by a young Andrew Bromley-Wilson, aged 10, of Wickford, Essex who lives in Garrucha, “It’s improved a lot,” said.
“I’ll be able to come down here with my family on my scooter. It’s great.” The paved area used to be an abandoned strip covered in rubbish.
Most of the workers involved in the marina’s construction were local people and now that it’s completed, a number of maintenance jobs will also be created for locals workers.
In addition, there’s an area where shops and restaurants will be built and there has already been quite a lot of business interest, according to the Port Authority.
The majority of non-Spanish boat owners that have applied for the use of moorings are British. Some of the applicants want to move their boats from other more crowded moorings whilst others have been waiting for the marina’s completion in order to buy boats.
A total of 201 applications have been accepted from people of several nationalities, including French, Dutch and German. At time of going to press it was not known whether an official opening ceremony was going to take place but the Port Authority confirmed that the barriers are to be removed this week.
For information on short and long-term moorings see the bilingual webpage: www.eppa.es which can also be viewed free of charge 24 hours a day on the multilingual computerised information point near the anchor at the edge of the marina.

Fire Figures
Source: Focus Almeria Magazine December 2011 Issue Page 20
The 2011 campaign to reduce and combat grass and forest fires finished on October 15th. The ‘Plan Infoca’ for Almería province included 12 million euros for the maintenance of fire breaks and the management of vegetation.
This work was done by more than 500 operatives. The special fire service turned out on 107 occasions with 79 of the fires being grass fires contained to less than 1 hectare of land. The other 28 actions were to forest fires that burnt down 21 hectares of forest. 30% of the callouts were put down to being 12% intentional events, and the other 18% negligence.
The town of Bayárcal in the Sierra Nevada National park required visits on 19 occasions, fortunately for minor fires and a man was arrested and charged with starting almost all of these fires.

Turre Solution
Source Almeria Focus Magazine Dec 2011 Issue
The mayor of Turre staged a sit-in at the Delegation of Employment in Almería City to try to unblock 316,000 euros that was due for the wages of the 36 council employees and 24 persons and staff of an employment workshop.
The mayor Arturo Grima held a press conference on the steps of the building announcing his sit-in, that he kept up for 3 nights, before returning to Turre for the weekend and back to the Delegation of Employment on the following Monday.
The money had been blocked because of a debt of 43,000 euros obtained by the previous council but not spent on the subject of the grant. Arturo Grima eventually reached an agreement with the Delegation that the 43,000 could be paid back in stage payments over the next 5 years, so freeing up the debt, and the release of the 316,000 euros.
A spokesperson for the Delegation stated that a sit-in was not the right way to conduct negotiations and that Turre council had always known that the refunding of the 43,000 euros had to be made

Cabrera Complex
Source: Focus Almeria Magazine December 2011 Issue Page 20
The Spanish Ministry of Defence are preparing to install a radar and communication complex on the highest point of Cabrera, the Cerro de la Mezquita, in the Turre municipality.
This peak is 960 metres above sea level and a popular spot for tourists owing to the phenomenal views. The first phase of the project is under way and involves the remaking of the access road that is budgeted at 280,000 euros. Once this is done, a 3,400 m2 platform will be created for the equipment and associated buildings at a cost of 570,000 euros.
The 1986 radar and communication project called the “Sistema de Ew Santiago” consists of 3 strategic terrestrial installations in Spain, along with air based and satellite equipment, designed to collect electronic information considered vital to the defence of Spain. The land based electronic information collection centre to be installed in Cabrera is known by the name “Scatar de Levante” and should have been completed by 2008. The Cerro de la Mezquita is privately owned, as is 90% of the Sierra Cabrera, and the landowner will receive an annual rent.
The mayor of Turre, Arturo Grima, states that the town hall has been informed of the project as a courtesy, but they have no say in the matter. Licence fees for the construction were paid to Turre town hall over 12 months ago. The town hall has requested that the provision of any major electricity supply allows for extension to neighbouring properties.

Cabrera Open Gardens Held on Sunday 9th May
Although the day was windy we had an excellent attendance of 466, which was 167 up on last year. Tea and cakes were, once again, very popular and we sold 561, again up on last year. We were happy to donate €2,185.00 to Macs Cancer Support, €1,484.74 to our Fiesta Fund, and €134.90, which was raised through plant sales, for the Library. I think it was a very good day, enjoyed by our visitors, from far and wide, and our exhibitors. A real fun day.
Just thinking of next year if any of you would like to open their garden please let me know. We always have one or two drop out because of other commitments and it’s so nice to have new gardens.

Helicopter Rides in Cabrera (May 2009)
THRILL-seeking revellers at this year's Sierra Cabrera Fiesta in Turre will have a new fun-day activity to look forward to - helicopter rides.
The organisers of the popular event on June 13 have decided to include them as part of this year's festivities in a bid to attract bigger crowds, courtesy of UK-based company, Avon Air.
Costing 35 euros per person, the 10-15 minute flight will take in spectacular views of the Sierra Cabrera mountains, the Cortijo Grande golf course, Turre and surrounding areas.
Fiesta committee member Margaret Arnup, who was inspired by her husband John's high-flying idea to include the helicopter rides, said: "We thought it would be a good way to attract more people to this year's fiesta - it's definitely something different."
Mrs Arnup said she took her cue from a fellow resident. "A friend of ours is a helicopter pilot and he lands outside a house ranch nearby whenever he flies in," she revealed.
Although the cost of the flights will be met by Sierra Cabrera's expat community, Mrs Arnup encouraged any would-be sponsors to get involved. "We're really keen to get everyone on board and we definitely want to share this experience with the Spanish community as well," she said.
Avon Air, the Bristol-based firm which specialises in arranging helicopter pleasure rides, sent two helicopters to Spain, one of which flew into Turre earlier this week to give a foretaste of what to expect.
Star guest at the test flight was Turre mayor Francisco Ortega, who described the 10-minute trip as "very interesting".
Accompanied by sports councillor Melchor Navarro and this reporter, an enthusiastic Sr Ortega said shortly after landing: "I'd recommended it to everyone - my family and friends included."
TURRE's expat community donates hundreds of library books
EXPATS have donated 1,000 books to Turre's new library to coincide with International Book Day.
A vast collection of thrillers, biographies as well as romantic and historical novels were hastily unpacked and placed on the library's shelves barely two days before an official visit by local councillors and Almería's culture delegate, Yolanda Callejón, last week.
The mayor of Turre, Francisco Ortega, who had organised the presentation to coincide with International Book Day, presented Sra Callejón with an English-language edition of Don Quixote.
In response, Sra Callejón praised the book donation "as an act of generosity to the people of Turre", adding that it gave "every resident an opportunity to enjoy reading".
The gift was the brainchild of Geoff Meeks, the Chairman of Sierra Cabrera's library committee, who said: "It's nice when we can make a gesture like this - we're also making a point that we're happy living here."
Mr Meeks said Cabrera Library had become so successful that it was only a matter of time before books began to accumulate. "We thought of selling them as we don't have many funds for the library, but all the time we had around 1,000 surplus paperbacks," he said.
The recently inaugurated library in Turre was seen as the ideal recipient for the books, which were donated by a member of the Sierra Cabrera Library.
Sr Ortega praised expats for the donation and stressed it was part of an ongoing cultural exchange between the local council and the community in Sierra Cabrera.
Brit artist wins poster competition
A BRIT resident of Cabrera has beaten off all competition to display her artwork on the Cabrera Fiesta publicity poster for 2009.
The annual competition, run by Andalusian Arts organiser Debbie Redding, was won by artist Bernice Willis - ‘Bunny' to her friends.
Two hundred people who attended the Open Garden's Day in Cabrera a fortnight ago voted on the various contributions from local artists, but Bunny's effort featuring the Moorish archway in the village stole the show.
Ms Willis' winning painting was recently sold at a local exhibition.
