Features!
I don’t know quite where to start. I’ve been asked to do a write up about the day itself. But to me the fiesta started in February this year, when we held a meeting to debate on the fiesta. Since then we have not stood still.

The old Fiesta Committee wanted “New Blood”, they were tired and worn out. Who can blame them! They had worked hard for the last 4 years putting on the annual fiesta.

Well we certainly got “New Blood” and retained some “Old Blood” as well. The result was an extremely positive and enthusiastic committee. We discussed, shared & debated everything. We had lots of new ideas and fund raising was high on the agenda. We had great fun and I think it showed; the money poured in.

At the beginning however, we had no money, we decided we couldn’t afford the paella, the hats, or a big Spanish show band and we would be lucky if we covered the basics let alone extras.

But that all changed, when we found that the support we received was overwhelming, despite what is a difficult for year for companies and for us all. The “Crisis” or “Credit Crunch”, or whatever you want to call it, surprisingly didn’t hamper our efforts. In a way I think it helped, businesses wanted to let everyone know they were open for “business”, we had a record 23 stalls. Raffle prizes just kept getting offered to us.

I feel I could write a book (He, He!), so I’ll just get onto the Day itself and stop waffling!

I witnessed the last 7 days run up to the fiesta; It was a hive of activity with people working to get everything ready, Antonio, Paco & Diego, Damian, Jose Garcia, Jose Jerez, Segundo Ramirez , Turre Town hall and numerous other workers, – all worked non stop.
The helicopter rides started at 3:00pm. Ken Warn & Jeff Douglas Smith were our pilots for the day, and by the end managed to give just over 80 people a fantastic view of the fiesta & Cabrera. The views are every bit as spectacular as you would imagine. They reminded me of the reason why I came here in the first place.

The morning was extremely busy, the stall holders were setting up, bar was ready extra early, the bouncy castle was in position; virtually everything was ready for 5:00pm. Even the Mayor, Franciso Ortega Soler, turned up on time. However, in keeping with the fiesta’s tradition the Light & Sound equipment were late, so the opening and program of events were delayed.
However, the Piped Musicians were OK so music started at 5:00pm.

Eventually the Mayor of Turre, opened the Fiesta, together with the President of the Junta, Segundo Ramirez, & the Fiesta Committee, and then we could really start to celebrate.
The Stilt Walkers & Jugglers came out – wrapping people up with their spiraling ribbons, much to the delight of the children. Splat the Rat was a fantastic draw. I don’t know if anyone was able to hit the rat as it shot out, but I know there were hundreds of attempts :) Robert Uzzell’s son, ran the stall late into the night, he thoroughly enjoyed it.
Graham & Trisa Meeks ran the Crazy Golf Stall. Graham told me that he thought that maybe he had made the course too difficult, but then a 4 year old girl came along and putted the golf ball for a hole in one, much to everyone’s amazement. There were sweets for the children & a beer for the adults for prizes.

The bouncy castle was under the supervision of Candice and her daughter, and was a huge success. The Children’s horse rides, provided for by Rancho de Cabrera, were endless. Tony didn’t stop!
There was the traditional Cabrera Bric a Brac stall, headed up by Sheila
Golding. Face painting stall, Art Stall from Andalusian Arts and Photo’s from Chantal Reed. Clothes stalls, Jewellery Stalls, Food, Cheese & Wine Stalls, Gift Stalls, Iron Art, MACS came and so did Ananda from Turre.
The Postres run by Stuart & Jose Baynham, and helped by Mia went very well – they’d heard all the stories, about the pushing & shoving for the postres, so they were well prepared and then were really surprised when everyone behaved themselves and formed a queue!! :). (He, He!)

We had an unusual Art Exhibition from Denise & Karen, with their paintings and Paper “Porcelain” Sculptures & a Photography Exhibition at Los Pastores restaurant.

Mo, Chrissie & Robert sold lots more Raffle Tickets on the day, and Ken Warn donated pilot T-Shirts for auction.

As I sat at my helicopter desk, beautiful smells from Fatima’s BBQ wafted over to me. I could see a crown gathered in a circle and eventually I realised it was the Sherry Man who had been skillfully pouring sherry for hours on end for people to drink.

On the stage we had the Martial Arts Display, a beautiful Ballerina, and the Anita Watson Dancers, who all went down a treat. Then we had the Flamenco Dancers, who put on an outstanding display.

The evening got underway with dancing to music from one of our local Bands “One Mo’ Time” with our famous Bob Hall or should I say infamous. The DJ took over for a while, (I forgot to ask him for a request to play “Here Come the Girls”, for me, Mo, Mia & Chantal who were supposed to strut our stuff) then “Qrquesta Amanecer” started and people danced & danced until the early hours of the morning..

Then I went to bed!

I hope you enjoyed the fiesta as much as we enjoyed putting it on. See you all next year.
