PROCEDURE IN THE EVENT OF A FIRE!
1. IF YOU SEE A FIRE or SMELL SMOKE , YOU MUST RAISE THE ALARM!
DO NOT ASSUME SOMEONE ELSE WILL HAVE DONE IT, unless you KNOW!
It is better to receive many phone calls than none at all!!
2. Telephone:-
| Emergency Services | 112 (English spoken) |
| A member of the Junta: - | |
| Segundo Ramirez | 950 46 90 58 |
| José Luis Jerez | 609 62 61 40 |
| Keith Sharpe | 950 52 91 57 |
| Jo Chambers | 678 48 65 47 |
| Paul Melhuish | 690 69 55 83 |
| Tony Scane | 950 52 80 80 |
| Margaret Arnup | 647 90 14 78 |
3. If you can, INFORM YOUR NEIGHBOUR(S) and if it is safe to do so, proceed to take the following steps IMMEDIATELY, bearing in mind evacuation might become necessary:-
a. Pack an emergency overnight bag per person;
b. Do not forget valuables, special medicines, and pets.
c. Pack your escritura, insurance documents, and inventory. (It is wise to have all of these together and easily accessible at all times.)
d. Close all windows, shutters and doors. If time allows take down all curtains as these will fuel the fire.
4. PROCEED to the square by the main arch and car park area.
5. The Guardia Civil will come to the square and instruct you IF and WHEN to EVACUATE.
6. DO NOT take unilateral action to fight any fire, major or not – leave it to the professionals.
7. DO NOT endanger your life or that of others.
8. The area is well equipped to fight fires:
In Cabrera there are some 20 “Bomberos” points where Fire Tenders can replenish their tanks from pools, these points are continually being added to whenever possible.
Professional fire fighters and a number of well-trained volunteers are available locally and can be seconded from other areas.
Specially adapted helicopters and planes can be called in to assist in fire fighting.
REMEMBER THAT YOU AND YOUR FAMILY HAVE A DUTY TO SAFEGUARD AND PROTECT YOUR OWN HOME BUT YOU ALSO HAVE A DUTY TO YOUR NEIGHBOURS AND CABRERA AS A WHOLE.
A COPY OF THIS INFORMATION SHOULD BE DISPLAYED
PROMINENTLY
IN YOUR HOUSE.
There are 2 main routes out of Cabrera; both go DOWN the mountain to Turre, if you have any doubts as to where they are please ask. Both are in close proximity to the Arch in the main village, one is the road facing the arch and the other is at the end of the main Plaza / car park. In the event of a fire starting below Cabrera there is an alternative route OVER the mountain which should be undertaken ONLY if you are very familiar with this route and ONLY if advised to do so by the Guardia Civil.
If you are in doubt as to whether it is safe on either route wait in the main Plaza / car park for the Guardia Civil to arrive and take charge.
DO’S AND DON’TS FOR A SAFER ENVIRONMENT.
1. DO keep your escritura; insurance and inventories list easily accessible.
2. If you are a smoker be extra careful, these are the major cause of fires especially alongside our roads. DO make sure that all cigarettes are fully extinguished, and that they are not thrown out of car windows!.
3. DO when out walking, pick up pieces of broken glass and bottles and take them home or place them in the nearest waster paper bin.
4. DO be conscientious in your housekeeping. Be conscious of any inflammatory materials that may be lying around close to your property and remove them. Clear dead brushwood from around the property.
5. DO NOT LIGHT FIRES but, if you feel you have to, you MUST seek permission from the Guardia Civil, the Town Hall and the Junta de Cabrera. IF permission is granted which is highly unlikely, you must still take every possible precaution. If there are any consequences from your actions you will be held personally liable.
6. DO NOT HAVE CARBON (charcoal) BBQ´s. The Junta de Andalucía forbids the lighting of carbon BBQ’s during the high fire risk months which are during May to October. Details of the dates are posted on the Junta Notice board each year.
7. DO NOT place any garden refuse on the site after the last date for garden rubbish as it will not be able to be burned and will make a fire hazard. Likewise because the site is unavailable or at any time of the year DO NOT throw garden rubbish down the mountain or leave it lying around.
8. FINALLY NEVER UNDERESTIMATE:
The power of the wind to fan a fire: The speed at which a fire can spread: The speed at which a fire can change direction, and turn a seemingly safe route into a potential death trap: The ability of a fire to re-ignite: The intense heat caused by a fire: The dense smoke which can emanate from a fire.
AND REMEMBER THE THREE THIRTIES INDICATE THAT CONDITIONS ARE IDEAL FOR MAJOR FIRES TO OCCUR.
30% HUMIDITY 30 kph WIND SPEED 30ºC TEMPERATURES.
KEEP VIGILANT, BE PREPARED, BE CAREFUL, AND KEEP SAFE!!
