Gas
After a long wait, new progress is being made on the piped gas supply for Cabrera. In the last year or so, it has been held up by the infrastructure issues on the hill up from Cortijo Grande, but things are now moving forward again (mid-Feb 2008). The gas will be supplied from bulk tanks at the bottom of the hill, and there is now a piped installation from the there all along the ranch road and around the back of La Pilica. We expect that the gas supplier (Repsol?) will install the tanks in the next couple of months and will then provide quotes for making the connection from the mains pipe at the boundary of each plot to the house. With gas being the potentially hazardous stuff that it is, this installation will have to be done by the gas supplier.
We have no indication of prices at the moment, but it stands to reason that the cost must be competitive with the alternative of separate bottles. As soon as we have better information we will attempt to publish here a direct comparison of the prices for small bottles, large bottles and piped. This will enable Cabrera residents to make an informed decision on whether to buy into the piped gas or not.
There are no short-cuts with gas installation. Therefore, the initial supply will only be to the area which has the new pipes already installed. The rest of the village will be brought on-stream grandually when the new infrastructure on the hill has been completed and then when the pipes have been laid under the existing roads of the village.
