Street Lights
During December 2007, half the bulbs in the new street lights were changed from the garish blue-white to softer yellow-white ones. This "half", consisted of every alternate light. We have no news on what is going to happen to the rest, but at least this is a small step in the right direction, given the almost universal dislike of street lights by the residents of Cabrera. After all, dark nights and a glorious starry sky were probably one of the things that drew us to Cabrera in the first place.
The first street lights have now been switched on in Cabrera (5 February 2007) and we now have the "benefit" of illumination along the ranch road. The lights are a bright bluish white and are mounted just below eye level. Pedestrians and drivers are probably best advised to take care not to look directly at the lights as the dazzle will then result in reduced visibility.
Apparently the street lighting is a requirement of "urbanisation". It seems not to matter whether it contributes any real benefit to the village or indeed whether it is just light pollution and a waste of electricity.
As the new urbanisation infrastructure is rolled out throughout the village, the lighting will be extended to all areas. This will bring the benefit of the possibility of obtaining a formal First Occupation licence for both new and existing houses. This is essential for new houses as the only means now available for obtaining an electricity connection from Sevillana. It is also desirable for existing houses as it is a requirement of many banks before agreeing to a mortgage.
